Project Microresi Peru

The project aims to decipher microbiomes of extreme environments to ensure crop resilience to the effect of climate change and food security. Its objective is to obtain microbiomes with the potential to isolate and capture heavy metals (Cd) in cocoa crops and prevent their accumulation. To this end, (i) microbiomes will be identified from farms with different levels of cadmium concentration in the Amazon region; (ii) cadmium-tolerant bacteria will be isolated from soils with high cadmium concentrations; and (iii) finally, the potential of tolerant bacteria from soils with high cadmium concentrations in cocoa plants will be evaluated. This project will help minimize the negative impact of heavy metal accumulation on crops in the Amazon region for the benefit of farmers.
